The National Cycle Network and cycle tracks in Kent

Kent is not known as the Garden of England for nothing. Fruit orchards abound and the old hop oast houses dot the landscape. Amazingly for a county so close to London and criss-crossed with motorways to the Channel ports, cycling on Kent’s byways is a picture of tranquillity. There is also a great coastline, lots of historic sites and beautiful marsh landscapes as well as the North Downs and the Wealden Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Many of the best rides in Kent follow the National Cycle Network. The route of the former Pilgrims, for example runs from Rochester to the cathedral city of Canterbury – the 45-mile route is roughly half on-road and half traffic-free. Fully traffic-free is the Crab and Winkle way from Canterbury to Whitstable – don’t forget to try the oysters, said to be some of the best in Britain.

The Kent coastline has just about everything, including cliff views, wonderful wildlife, seafront promenades and the historic Cinque Ports (four are in Kent, New Romney, Hythe, Dover and Sandwich). The proximity of a large number of railway stations and the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch steam railway, which carries bikes, offers the opportunity to explore far and wide with the train taking the strain when things get a bit too much.
