The National Cycle Network and cycle tracks in Central Sussex & South Surrey

Such is the beautiful calm of so much of the Sussex and South Surrey countryside, it’s hard to imagine a city as vibrant and lively as Brighton is never far away. Just north of the city lie the South Downs, from where breathtaking views can be seen of the English Channel, the undulating ridge of the South Downs Way and the lush green of Sussex countryside. Sussex and South Surrey are scattered with beautiful, quiet woodlands and quaint, charming villages which are a joy to explore and easy to reach.

From family cycle rides to mountain bike trails, this area has routes for all abilities and disciplines of cycling. Brighton promenade is a truly delightful stretch for a leisurely glide on the bike, especially when the sun shines, and is part of National Route 2 that runs along the south coast. Further west along the coast are Shoreham, Worthing, Littlehampton, Bognor Regis and the towns and villages surrounding Chichester Harbour, full of yachts and sailors. Eastwards from Brighton are Lewes, the county town, Newhaven, and the seaside towns of Hastings and Eastbourne. The Cuckoo Trail is an old railway line running north from Eastbourne, covered by arching trees for much of the route. It forms a part of the Avenue Verte, London to Paris cycle route, using the Newhaven-Dieppe cross-Channel ferry crossing. There are other traffic-free routes in abundance (try the Centurion Way north of Chichester and see its unique sculptures), quiet country lanes and also the South Downs Way, a fantastic mountain bike route.
